Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme
The Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme is a two-year programme within the Leaving Certificate. It aims to give a strong vocational dimension to the Leaving Certificate (established). The programme combines academic study and vocational subjects with a focus on self-directed learning, enterprise, work and the community. Students follow the LCVP modules as part of the Leaving Certificate Established programme. It is an ‘extra’ subject, chose above and beyond the option subjects.
Young people taking the L.C.V.P. have a unique opportunity to develop their interpersonal, vocational and technological skills. These skills will be an asset to the student in any future path they take. All students who decide to participate in the LCVP will take LCVP as an eighth subject. Students participating in the programme will complete a block period of work experience typically during their mid term break. Entry to this programme is optional. Leaving Certificate points are awarded for this programme and accepted in the majority but not all higher education courses. In over 50% of cases in recent years students have used their LCVP points in place of another subject for the purpose of calculating points for CAO.
The primary goal of the LCVP is to prepare young people for adult life by ensuring that they are educated in the broadest sense, with an ability to cope and thrive in an environment of rapid change. Participants in the programme are encouraged to develop skills and competencies fundamental to both academic and vocational success.
Throughout the programme students are encouraged to:
· Be innovative and enterprising
· Take responsibility for their own learning
· Adapt to changing circumstances
· Evaluate data and devise solutions to problems
· Communicate their thoughts and ideas effectively
· Work with others as part of a team
· Investigate and plan career options
· Use information and communications technologies
· Investigate local businesses and community enterprises
· Learn from their experiences
These skills and qualities are equally relevant to the needs of those preparing for further education, seeking employment or planning to start their own business.
LCVP is coordinated by our Programme Coordinator Ms. Michelle Brady.
All students will prepare a CV as part of their LCVP course work. This will assist with the process of finding suitable work placement. CV support is also accessible on our guidance website, accessible HERE under ‘CV’.
