Beaufort College Global Festivals: Caring For Our World through Culture and Development Education
The main thing that I learned today is that every single person can make a change and has a voice and has to stand up, but if we want to make a change, we have to do it now because time is ticking away.
Climate Justice Activist
We, in Beaufort College, enjoy educating ourselves and others about countries and people around the globe through Development Education activities, music, languages, dance, costumes and flags.
In Beaufort College over 40% of the student population is international. It is vital that students and teachers are educated about world traditions, cultures, languages, religions etc., to encourage a spirit of respect and tolerance, and to combat injustice, poverty and racism. Activities such as our “Global Festivals” inspire students to look at issues outside of their personal life experiences and to enjoy themselves by becoming aware of and celebrating diverse cultures.
Each year we aim to build on a central musical or cultural event through in-class DE initiatives in as many subject areas as possible. This model of cross-curricular is now embedded in our annual school curriculum.
Students and teachers of Beaufort College participate directly in our project, and family members are invited to enjoy/learn from an annual multi-cultural evening celebration .
PROJECT AIMS, DESCRIPTION AND TIMEFRAME
- Our Global Festival projects aim to provide opportunities for the students and teachers of Beaufort College to learn about the cultures, languages, musical instruments, costumes and dance steps of the various developing countries connected to our students.
- By the Friday of our annual Global Festival week our aim is that every student in Beaufort college is more aware of DE concepts and their importance in the modern world.
